About

The Young Masters Art Prize 2012 operates as a not-for-profit initiative of the Cynthia Corbett Gallery. In a celebration of both modern skill and tradition, this award recognises emerging artistic talent and innovation.

As an exciting, high-profile competition initiated in 2009, Young Masters features emerging and newly established artists who are inspired by the work of the Old Masters. Each artist references an element of the established art-historical canon, either through technique, imagery or subject, whilst establishing an undeniably contemporary spin on highly revered paintings. By placing these contemporary works firmly in contrast to the existing art-historical canon, the Young Masters Art Prize is both unique and ground-breaking.

Young Masters Art Prize 2009 served as the inaugural launch of the art prize. Awarded by an independent panel of judges, the prize was awarded to two winners in that year: American artist duo, Ghost of a Dream, and Héctor de Gregorio, a Spanish artist living and working in London. Sponsored by AXA UK, the artists were presented with the award by AXA Group Chief Executive Nicolas Moreau.

In 2010 Lluís Barba was selected as having the best response to the concept of Young Masters, and was honoured with a special pop-up exhibition at the Courtauld Institute as part of the East Wing IV Exhibitionism show. Lluís Barba reworks iconic artworks to comment on contemporary society, introducing modern characters into Hieronymus Bosch’s or Pieter Brueghel’s medieval scenes.
