We are delighted to announce that artist Derrick Santini has created an exclusive edition of his spectacular lenticular photograph ‘Seven for a Secret,’ from his ‘Magpie’s Rhyme’ series, especially for the Young Masters initiative. This smaller scale version is available in an edition of 10.

About the Work
This work has its roots in mythology, fantasy and folklore. It is the culmination of Santini’s long-harboured ideas, based around people and birds and the metaphysical world that binds these creatures and characters, in lore and in reality. For many years Santini wanted to bring the Magpie’s Rhyme to life. His signature use of the lenticular process became the catalyst to the work’s eventual realisation. Initially envisaged as a series of photographs, instead the artist progressed to creating moving photographic lenticulars to tell these stories, bringing these ancient notions to life.

The Magpie’s Rhyme “one for sorrow two for joy three for a girl four for a boy five for silver six for gold and seven for a secret never to be told,” are depicted as a series of lenticular portraits – a rogues’ gallery of sorts.

The in-between, the changeling, a world within a world, are the constant themes that motivate and propel Santini’s work. The lenticular process encapsulates these elements and virtues, beautifully – the medium is the message as much as the content of the works.

About the Artist

Derrick Santini grew up in Scarborough, North Yorkshire, where he first discovered his love for photography at the tender age of thirteen. Derrick spent his teenage years recording everything he saw, before this early fascination became a serious calling when he applied to Harrogate College to study for a BTEC in photography. This was followed by a BA Hons in ‘Photography and Communication’ at the London College of Communication (formerly LCP).

After an initial period prolific in reportage, Derrick’s talent saw him rapidly propelled into the fields of portraiture, music photography, fashion and advertising, where he soon became renowned for his intimate and insightful portraiture style.

This early work burgeoned into numerous acclaimed commissions; many of these iconic images feature in an anthology of his work, ‘Persona’, published by Dazed books in 2004. Now an equally well-established name in the fields of Fashion, Music and Advertising, Derrick continues to be the photographer of choice; shooting both eminent names and brands, whilst championing new artists, designers and publications.

A few years ago Derrick began experimenting with lenticular photographic works. These have taken off substantially in the last three years, with solo shows in London and Istanbul, as well as numerous group shows as far afield as New York, Miami and Brazil. His pieces have proven extremely popular with gallerists and collectors alike, as well as counting Adele and Jemima Khan as owners and fans of his work. Santini was shortlisted for the Young Masters Art Prize 2012 and was highly commended for technical excellence. He joins The Young Masters Tour for 2013.

Young Masters Artist Sun Ae Kim tells us about her love of English ceramics and William Morris:

Can you explain to us what your work is about?

The ‘Twelve Red Plates’ were created in response to a site-specific project with The National Trust property Red House, which was once William Morris’ House in Bexleyheath.

I have a huge interest in the The Red House and what has accumulated since William Morris. My inspiration comes from the uncovering of discovered hidden colours, paintings and drawings. I have interpreted the layered history into 12 ceramic plates which in a way document the history of Red House. The red-based plates represent the original embroidered hangings of Illustrious Women, depicting 12 maidens.

What is it about the Young Masters project that you are most interested in?

What I find most interesting about the Young Masters project is that it celebrates the spirit of the old masters’ craftsmanship by presenting contemporary artists’ works of art.

Which artist/s are you most inspired by?

I am mostly inspired by the craftsmanship of potters and modellers of England. The ceramic processes of the past help me develop my studio practice.

Can you tell us something about your background?

I spent most of my childhood in Korea where the value tradition and craftsmanship are still very much appreciated. I have been influenced by the beauty of ceramics from history. My cultural background has a significant impact on my studio practice. Since moving to London, my identity has been exposed to new paths and shown me new perspectives

What inspired you to become an artist?

The way I see the historical and traditional aspects of craft in contemporary lens inspired me to becoming an artist.

If you weren’t an artist what would you be?

I don’t think about what I would be instead as I have wanted to be an artist for such a long time. However if had to pick maybe an Historian.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

Now I am fully confident of what I do in terms of artistic practice, I think this is my greatest achievement of all.

What are your plans for the future?

I will be developing my career and practice as a professional artist in contemporary ceramics field.

Young Masters Artist Christiane Pooley gives us an insight into her inspiration and thoughts about her future.

Can you explain to us what your work is about?

My work is about colour, light and the depiction of space. I’m trying to code ideas into visual language. I imagine it is very similar as to composing music.

What is it about the Young Masters project that you are most interested in?

That it celebrates traditional technique in contemporary art practice.

Which artist/s are you most inspired by?

So many. I love the light in painters such as Fairfield Porter, Edward Hopper or Johannes Vermeer; the mysterious images of Nordic painters such as Mamma Andersson or Lars Elling; the expansion of what painting is and can be in the works of Jessica Stockholder and Franz West, or the way Sthephan Melzl or Michael Börremans engage painting technique in a critical and informed way.

Can you tell us something about your background?

I was born and raised in the south of Chile, and moved to London to study Art at the age of 23 and I´m currently living and working in Paris.

What inspired you to become an artist?

Like most kids I was thrilled by drawing and painting I just didn’t loose the enthusiasm.

If you weren’t an artist what would you be?

A collector

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

I was very flattered to have shown my work along with Franz West.

What are your plans for the future?

I was invited to develop a project in Norway at KinoKino a centre for film and I’m currently working on a project that will take place in Madrid in September. I also look forward the publication of the book Sub30, which includes a bunch of young artist working on painting today and which will be followed by an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Santiago de Chile.

Visual Artist Aileen McEwan gives us an insight into her inspiration and thoughts about her future.

Can you explain to us what your work is about?

I am interested in cultural definitions of beauty, taste, desire and value, focusing on the play between individuality and the wider regulative forces of society. The work takes the form of jewel-like paintings that function as totems of aspiration in their own right. With a focus on materiality of space, narrative and nostalgia, the environments and objects depicted often appear staged or false.

I source ubiquitous and familiar images of aspiration from popular media and the history of painting. My work is informed by an awareness of my position as a young female artist as regards femininity, creation and cultural expectation.

What is it about the Young Masters project that you are most interested in?

The popular belief has been than a genuine interest in traditional technical painting skill and the work of the old masters is something to be ashamed of. By grounding the project in contemporary art practice, however, it is possible to walk the razor edge of nostalgia without being saccharine or stale. The project seems to herald the change in thinking; that we can learn from the past but play with it.

Which artist/s are you most inspired by?

John Singer Sargent and Edouard Vuillard are both very important to my practice but I also I love artists like Moya Flannigan, Lisa Yuskavage and Jenny Saville. I tend to gravitate towards female artists whose work is figurative, beautiful but slightly sinister. I really admire their control of paint, their focus on mark making and use of colour.

Can you tell us something about your background?

My extended family is pretty creative, they include several artists and gallery owners. My parents have always encouraged me to be creative. As a child I was always presenting my mum with fantastical things made from egg boxes and old toilet roll tubes.

What inspired you to become an artist?

I have wanted to create things for as long as I can remember. When I was five, we were asked in primary school to paint a copy of Van Gogh’s Sunflowers. Mine was held up in front of the class and the teacher asked had I ever considered being an artist. I thought it sounded like a good idea.

If you weren’t an artist what would you be?

I think I would have studied psychology or become a counsellor. I am very interested in unpicking how people work.

What is your greatest achievement as an artist to date?

Being shortlisted for part of the Saatchi New Sensations 2012. It was incredibly flattering and encouraging to have been chosen. I Graduated from Glasgow School of Art last July and it felt very much like leaving the protective bubble of the studio. It was a daunting prospect and it would be very easy to stop working, but having been selected has given me a confidence boost and spurred me on to continue to create.

What are your plans for the future?

I am completing my first year in practice, outside art school and I hope to continue creating and exhibiting. I also hope to do a Masters in the near future.

We are proud to announce that one of our Young Masters artists has been featured in Nicole Swengley’s article ‘A Great Relief ‘ on the The Worldly Pleasures website from the Financial Times ‘How to Spend it.’

The article comments on the emerging trend of large-scale 3D wall art and the affect that this tactile art form has on home owners. Although sculptural wall art isn’t a new concept, the idea of having these art works in residential property is contemporary. The impact that 3D wall art creates is some thing that homeowners wish to experience in their homes, as Barbara Tober (a former chairman of the Board of Trustees of New York’s Museum of Arts and Design) highlights, 3D wall art has ’the power to quicken the senses and add visual excitement to a space’

Taken from Swengley’s article, “Folly [by Beth Katleman] is a still life, yet it is animated and belongs not to the age of enlightenment or romanticism, but to the age of film and the internet,” This piece has been sold to private collectors in Korea, Hong Kong and Sydney.

Here is an interview he did with the magazine last November talking about the inspiration for his work and being shortlisted for the Young Masters Art Prize! Looks like amazing things are happening for Moxon so keep an eye out for him and his incredible, hyper realist portraits!
