Shortlisted artist Bex Massey on her work
What is it about Young Masters that you are most interested in?
Young Masters offers a platform to exhibit and interact with other artists who are directly influenced by art history.
Can you explain to us what your work is about?
I am fascinated by narratives in popular culture and how they are being continually mis/represented and reinvented in everything from tabloids to folk tales. ‘He’s so hot right now’ (based on the Hansel and Gretel fable) is part of a recent series inspired by the Grimm Fairy Tales. Like current affairs reportage, these children’s stories continue to evolve from their original themes. By combining traditional painting techniques and ready-made objects I am trying to reinvent these stories once more within the context of history of art and the language of contemporary display.
